Mary Clare Carroll 1738
Available at your local needlework shop and at www.mountclare.org, the proceeds of this sampler chart go to Mount Clare Museum House, the oldest Museum House in Baltimore, Maryland. This authentic reproduction is taken from the original in the collection of Mount Clare Museum House. This was the home of Charles Carroll, Barrister, author of Maryland's Declaration of Independence and the older brother of Mary Clare Carroll of Annapolis. This sampler is mentioned in the 1920 book on Samplers by Bolton and Coe and the recent book on Maryland Samplers by Gloria Seaman Allen.
The model is stitched on 36 count cream linen with DMC threads over two threads of linen. The design size is 249 stitches wide by 475 stitches high. The approximate finished size is 14" wide and 26.5" high. Stitches used in this faithful reproduction sampler are Cross, Algerian Eye, Satin, Stem, Back, French Knot, Straight, Long-armed Cross, and Random Cross Stitch.
